Why We Love Glerups Slippers for 2023

A few years ago, I volunteered to test a pair of Glerups slippers, our upgrade

A few years ago, I volunteered to test a pair of Glerups slippers, our upgrade slipper pick. I haven't found a better slipper since. Once my feet were shod in these sleek, comfortable woolen shoes (which somehow never felt too hot), I simply couldn't suffer through walking on the bare wooden floors of my New York City apartment without them.

I’ve got the shoe version of the Glerups, in navy with the honey sole. After wearing them for three years, they’re still in top shape. These slippers are easy to get on and off, but they stay put on my feet. They don't make my feet sweat or smell. And they feel plush yet look minimalist. Even though it seems slightly silly to care about the aesthetics of a house shoe, the elegant design and neutral colors are gentle on the eyes.

The Glerups slippers are the most durable and supportive felted-wool slippers we tested. They’re warm, but they breathe well, so your feet don't get sweaty.

*At the time of publishing, the price was $95.

The felted-wool Glerups boots are comfortable, breathable, and durable. They’re easy to slip on, and they cover your ankles, so they’re a good choice for colder climates.

The notched rubber sole gives me a little tread for walking on smooth floors or for brief outdoor jaunts. If I have to duck outside for a package, the Glerups will take me there. I can wipe the soles down afterward if I need to.

Over the years I’ve tried other slippers, including a pair of shapeless, floppy Muji slippers (from a friend) and a set of budget-bin IKEA slippers with coarse-feeling terry cloth and thin soles (I couldn't resist them in the checkout line). But, really, why bother? The Glerups are too good.

When I make purchases these days, I want to buy something for life. The Glerups seem built to last. These slippers have a one-year warranty, and they come with simple care instructions to prolong the life of the wool (wool is self-cleaning, so it shouldn't get too gross over time). And these shoes are made with care. I’m obsessed with the Glerups origin story. After years of using wool from a small flock of sheep in Denmark to make shoes—by hand or with a carding machine—for family and friends, in 2005 Glerups founders Nanny and Ove expanded production to a factory in Romania. Now, we can buy Glerups online—lucky us. You’ll be even luckier if you make it to the Glerups museum (please send pics).

After many winters testing dozens of slippers, we think L.L.Bean's women's and men's Wicked Good Moccasins are the most comfortable and durable pair.

Glerups's timeless style appeals across age and gender. My dad marveled at my slippers so often that I bought him a pair too. They’ve replaced his texturized socks, which he wears to help with his neuropathy. Whenever we’re putzing around the house together in our matching slippers, we glance down at each other's feet and nod approvingly. "Nice slippers," he’ll say. "Nice slippers," I agree.

After six years of testing, the Glerups slippers are still one of our favorite pairs. They’re our upgrade option for the most comfortable and durable slippers. We love them for many reasons, including:

We used to see consistent deals in early spring, but deals on these are far less regular than they used to be.

Don't worry if you notice wool shedding from these slippers after you wear them for a few months. This is normal. You can pull the shedding wool off and throw it away—the felt shoe will still last for years to come.

Glerups recommends that you vacuum your slippers to clear them of dust, and then use either the wool wash, hand-wash, or delicates setting (maximum 86 degrees Fahrenheit) to machine-wash your slippers. After the slippers take a spin in the washer, Glerups advises putting your feet into the wet shoes to properly shape them. Then leave them to air-dry. Should anything go awry, Glerups slippers come with a two-year manufacturer's warranty, which protects against defects.
